THE DAGUERREOTYPE: AN ARCHIVE OF SOURCE TEXTS, GRAPHICS, AND EPHEMERA

The research archive of Gary W. Ewer regarding the history of the daguerreotype

On this day (January 4) in the year 1856, the following two items appeared in "The New York Herald" (whole No. 7067): - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - under "LOST AND FOUND": LOST--ON NEW YEAR'S DAY, A WATCH KEY, CON- taining two daguerreotypes. The finder will be suitably rewarded by leaving it at No. 8 Jauncey court, Wall street, or 11 Clinton place. and an advertisement: Fresh Budgets.--25 Cent Daguerreotypes-- opening daily, with the compliments of a happy new year, at the old established picture shop, enlarged and improved at 289 Broadway. Step in and see how you look for a quarter. (This address seemed to be a "revolving door" for a number of "picture factory" operators. At this time (1856) I believe the tenant was Reese & Co. --G. W. E.) ----------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-96
