THE DAGUERREOTYPE: AN ARCHIVE OF SOURCE TEXTS, GRAPHICS, AND EPHEMERA

The research archive of Gary W. Ewer regarding the history of the daguerreotype

On this day (January 27) in the year 1852, the following notice appeared in the "Boston Daily Evening Transcript": - - - - - - - - - - - - DAGUERREOTYPES BY THE DRUMMOND LIGHT. We remarked yesterday upon an experiment made by Mr Whipple in taking daguerreotypes by the Drummond light. Since writing, we have seen another specimen taken by the same light by Mr W, which is highly successful, and exhibits many advantages over daguerreotypes taken by sunlight. The former light being more uniform and more under the control of the operator, he can measure his effects with a nicety impracticable in the other instance. The daguerreotype before us shows an effect of light and shade, and a uniform distribution of tint, such as we do not remember to have seen before in a daguerreotype. -------------------------------------------------------------- 01-27-98
