THE DAGUERREOTYPE: AN ARCHIVE OF SOURCE TEXTS, GRAPHICS, AND EPHEMERA

The research archive of Gary W. Ewer regarding the history of the daguerreotype

Both today's and tomorrow's posts are about some non-daguerreian activities of the Boston daguerreotypist John A. Whipple. On this day (February 5) in the year 1850, the following notice appeared in the "Boston Daily Evening Transcript": - - - - - THE NEW EXHIBITION, by Mr Whipple, the well known Daguerreotypist, attracted a good audience to his rooms, No 96 Washington street, last evening. The performance was truly novel and most artistically successful--the "dissolving views" absolutely entrancing the spectators, while the concluding display of "pyramic fires" excited the highest wonder at their grandeur and magnificence. The exhibition will continue every evening for the present; and all our readers who would literally see "something new," and that of a delighting and instructive character, should not fail to attend. -------------------------------------------------------------- 02-05-00
