THE DAGUERREOTYPE: AN ARCHIVE OF SOURCE TEXTS, GRAPHICS, AND EPHEMERA

The research archive of Gary W. Ewer regarding the history of the daguerreotype

On this day (September 10) in the year 1857, the following item appeared in the "St. Catharines Journal" (St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, page 3): - - - - - - - - - - An Irishman in Oswego [New York] who had been two or three times, unsuccessfully, to an artist to take a dagguerreotype of his dead child, actually stopped the funeral procession, last Saturday, and taking the coffin up into the daguerrean gallery, insisted that the likeness should be taken. It was done, and the procession moved on, after standing some time in the street. (Courtesy of Dennis Gannon.
