On this day (October 19) in the year 1850, the following news item appeared in the "Boston Daily Evening Transcript": - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JENNY LIND. MOVEMENTS, DOINGS, &c. The Chestnut Theatre was crowded to its utmost capacity, on Thursday evening, at Jenny's first concert in Philadelphia. The greatest enthusiasm prevailed. Her first piece from Sonnambula, was succeeded by a perfect shower of bouquets. Half the audience were ladies. No quakers were present. Mr Root, who paid the big price, did not attend. The stockholders of the theatre, insisted on their right, and forced themselves into the house, which was considered a shameful and mean transaction. Otherwise the most perfect order was observed. The opinions of the Philadelphia press are various, yet all concede to her the highest honors as an artiste. ...Root's daguerreotype of Miss Lind has been published in lithography, and is pronounced an excellent likeness, and a great work of art. It is sold for $2. Jenny Lind's "Salutation to America," music by Strakosch, was published yesterday, by Hall & Son, New York.
